The Vikings delivered an impressive performance on both sides of the ball in Friday’s 39-21 win over Frostproof in the Class 2S, Region 4 final.

Bishop Verot (10-2) piled up 447 yards of offense, including 234 rushing yards against a talented Bulldogs front line. Defensively, the Vikings responded from a shaky first half to limit Frostproof (10-3) to just seven points and 130 yards in the final two quarters.

Early on, however, the mood was anything but celebratory. The Bulldogs ran the ball right down the field on the Vikings on the game’s opening drive, marching 80 yards in six plays to grab a 7-0 lead.

Another key sequence came with Frostproof holding on to a 14-13 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the half. Facing a fourth-and-7 from its own 23, the Bulldogs lined up to punt. But the snap sailed well over the head of punter Andrew Garcia, who squibbed it through the end zone for a safety that put Bishop Verot up 15-14.

After allowing Frostproof to rush for 184 yards in the first half, the Vikings held them to just 50 yards on the ground in the second and also forced a fumble. (read complete article)

CLASS 2S-REGION 4

(2) Frostproof at (1) Bishop Verot: Bishop Verot’s offense has been downright scary for opponents. The Vikings average 42 points and 428 yards per game. Sophomore quarterback Carter Smith has passed for 2,665 yards and 27 touchdowns (against just five interceptions), and rushed for 572 yards and 16 touchdowns. Frostproof (10-2) gets it done on the ground, rushing for 231.4 yards per game behind junior Donovan Solomon (1,476 yards). These teams share one common opponent. Bishop Verot lost to First Baptist (Naples) 56-42 in Week 4, while Frostproof lost to the same team 41-0 just three weeks ago. After winning its first district title in 31 years this season, Bishop Verot can win its first regional championship since 1994. Frostproof last won a regional title in 2008. (read complete article)

Bishop Verot 42, Clewiston 39

In a game that saw both teams combine for more than 1,000 yards of offense, the host Vikings held off a late comeback attempt by the Tigers and put to rest some old demons.

Bishop Verot, which entered the game just 1-23 all-time against Clewiston, appeared to have the game well in hand, taking a 42-27 lead with 8:23 left to play on sophomore quarterback Carter Smith’s fifth rushing touchdown of the night.

But the Tigers, who shredded the Vikings’ defense for 475 rushing yards, scored consecutive touchdowns, pulling within three points on senior running back Dayreon Franklin’s 25-yard scoring run with 1:14 remaining.

Out of timeouts, Clewiston tried an onside kick, but Bishop Verot freshman Deshon Jenkins secured the football and the victory for the Vikings. (read complete article)

Last Friday’s performance at Key West set a program record for passing touchdowns in a single game, and Smith has accounted for 36 scores this season (26 passing, 10 rushing), which breaks another school record.

Throwing for 2,238 yards and rushing for another 455 yards coming into the playoffs, a pair of county single-season records are also within reach: Kurt Benkert’s 2,771 passing yards with Cape Coral and Dallas Crawford’s 3,074 yards of total offense at South Fort Myers.

Freshman running back Deshon Jenkins has played a big part, averaging 85 yards a game in addition to 10 rushing scores.

The group is putting up 43 points a game, topping out at a whopping 67 points dropped on district opponent Gateway in their first game after Hurricane Ian. (read complete article)
