Seminoles Look Strong at End of Spring Ball

Florida High football concluded it spring workouts with a matchup against A. Crawford Mosley High School at Florida High on Thursday, May 19. The Seminoles hosted the Dolphins in a match-up that began with a scrimmage between junior varsity squads.

The Seminoles’ first drive saw Cannon Cowhey under center and included several nice pass completions, but it eventually stalled after a Noles penalty killed the drive’s momentum. Florida High’s special teams pinned the Mosley offense down after a punt by Cole Allbaugh was downed by Ashton Hampton at the Dolphin’s one yard line. The Seminoles’ JV defense struggled and gave up several big plays. The varsity offense took the field with the score FSUS 0, Mosley 14.

Led by junior quarterback Jeremy Johnston, the first team offense drove down the field. A big rushing play by Micahi Danzy got the ball inside the 5-yard line. Two plays later, the drive was capped off by a Danzy plunge behind the left tackle Mark Faircloth and a lead block by fullback Rhyder Poppell.

The first drive for the Seminole defense was extended by an offside penalty that flustered a third and long situation. Mosley had a couple big gains and eventually put another touchdown on the scoreboard, keeping the Noles down by 14. The defense’s second series was more successful, leading to a three and out followed by a Mosley punt.

The Seminole offense failed to capitalize during their third possession, which led to another Allbaugh punt. The subsequent Mosley drive was stopped almost immediately by a quick interception by DB Jayden Threats. It only took two plays for our offense to capitalize on the Mosley mistake when Micahi Danzy snagged a screen from Johnston, taking the ball 70 yards to the house. The Noles cut the Mosley lead to just 7.

The next couple of series saw an exchange of big plays that led to scores. Ashton Hampton scored on a 45-yard post route pass from Johnston. A 55-yard screen play to Poppell was the last score of the game. The match ended in a 28-28 tie.

Overall, the big play was king. Jeremy Johnston displayed some good decision making skills, protecting the ball and preventing any turnovers. The offensive line was stout for the most part, never giving up a sack and opening some big gaps for the backs and receivers to work with. Special teams performed well behind the foot of kicker Cole Allbaugh. Overall, the Seminoles were firing on all cylinders. Two key absences from the game were DB Donovan Barnes and RB Jalon Carter, who were rehabbing offseason injuries. Adding those key tools and honing position skills will position this team to make a run at that illusive state championship. It will be exciting to see how the team comes together during the hot Tallahassee summer.
